A visit to Walkenried monastery is particularly interesting as the Cistercians were not only strong believers but also very business-minded. Here, in one of the largest and most innovative monastery museums, visitors can experience European history both multimedia-based and literally at first hand. Viewing monastery history with the eyes of a modern manager? In Walkenried it is the key to understanding the development towards one of the richest and most powerful monasteries of its day. Not only spirituality but also economic, constructional and staff developments are the focus of the exceptionally well-prepared showrooms – an exciting experience for history loversand a great adventure for families with children.

Of course, everyday monastery life also forms a focus of the museum: historic showpieces and high-class reconstructed architectural structures mediate an impression of the Cistercians’ life, who came from Kamp in the lower Rhine region and founded their monastery in Walkenried in 1129. The particular highlights for visitors are the concerts, the tours by candlelight, the kids programs, the yearly monastery market and the open night on Easter Sunday.

The monastery still is a religious center as well: the former chapter house has been used as a church since 1570; the church services of the Protestant-Lutheran congregation in Walkenried take place here every Sunday.
