FACTS

This goat is one of the hundreds of life-size porcelain animals and birds commissioned by Augustus the Strong, Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, for his "Japanese Palace", the porcelain palace in Dresden.

It is actually one of two figures standing next to a younger billy goat, hence its rotating head.

The goat with its strong, curved horns, which curl at the ends, is lying on the ground with its legs bent.

As is usual with Kaendler's technique, we can see the details in the strands of fur, which skilfully emphasise the individual body parts. The slightly open snout. The eyes and ears and the tail curving upwards are all features of Kaendler's technique that bring the artwork to life.

This stately billy goat by the MEISSEN great artist Johann Joachim Kaendler should one day find its home in the collection of large animal sculptures of Augustus the Strong. The billy goat consists of 19 unique individual parts, which are assembled by the sculptors in such a way that it appears to be made of one piece.

Kaendler's compositions are always more than a mere reflection of nature. They reflect the unique character of each animal, show the moment when the animal appears at its most exciting and give us a rare insight into its soul.
