Our roots
The Schindelbruch is full of history and stories. On the site of the princely hunting lodge built in 1928, a mountain inn was later built, followed by a company holiday home in GDR times. After reunification, the ensemble of buildings was privatised, converted and the "Harzhotel im Schindelbruch" was opened. However, the property was abandoned in the 1990s.
An almost chance discovery led Dr Clemens Ritter von Kempski to the southern Harz in the mid-1990s. The countryside around the Auerberg and the beech forests near Stolberg have captivated him and his family ever since. They have long since made themselves at home here and put down deep roots. Dr Clemens Ritter von Kempski wishes to share the sense of happiness that the Harz countryside brings him with all guests and staff at the Naturresort & Spa Schindelbruch and its partner hotel, the FreiWerk.
Dr Clemens Ritter von Kempski recognised the potential and, in 2003, laid the foundation stone for the hotel by purchasing the site; today, it shines as a beacon of tourism far beyond Central Germany. He realised his vision of an eco-friendly hotel operation: As early as 2009, we were the first wellness hotel in Germany with (at the time)
a ‘fully offset carbon footprint’, and we have continued to develop consistently ever since – we remain leaders in sustainability and CSR/ESG to this day. Following numerous extensions, additions and refurbishments, the bathhouse opened in 2013 – the jewel in the crown of the Schindelbruch and a favourite spot for wellness guests. Another gem of the Harz Nature Hotel is the Landresidenz, which was completed in spring 2021. Brand new since December 2025 is the 25-metre-long outdoor pool, heated all year round – uniquely crafted from Bavarian granite.
